Been thinking about my Ugandan friend Damascus a lot, so I thought that I would share a Ugandan story today. Damascus once told me that:
“A man who has never left his home village, thinks that his mum is the best cook in the world”
I love this african saying and always try to remember it whenever I get to feeling that some new change or technology is too much trouble. Once remembered I can come out of my ‘home village’ and have a proper look around!
After all it is travel, people and your experiences that make new memories, without which we are mere consumers of air, food and space. Looking at my own life, I can easily attribute who I am today directly to my experiences in East Africa. Prior to that I was pretty shallow and lacked compassion or understanding about people in the world beyond my front garden. A real awakening.
Not surprisingly I have some really good memories from Uganda and more recently Rwanda. Memories that continue to shape who I am and the way that I feel about life. Do they influence what we do? Definitely, we have made some difficult decisions (and continue to do so!) about where to live and how to live our lives. However, trying to make your own way does upset people and compromises have to be made on both sides.
The question is, how much are you willing to give up in order to follow, (or even find) your real desires?
Stay well
