Life in Norway….

Brand New Tyre

Stark contrast
That’s what it is.  Don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you with “when I lived in Africa” again (yet!) but something happened today that really brought home the inequalities in this world. And, yet again it is the tiny things that sometimes have the most impact.

I am talking about tyres. In Africa, tyres were used until they exploded. Simple as that. New ones would be both difficult to find and afford. Instead they rely on cheap part worn imports from us.

So, you really know that you are in a wealthy country when, here in Norway a child’s swing has……..yes, you guessed it,  A Brand New Tyre!

Now that has got to be as mad as can be, millions of used tyres taken off our cars and they go and use a brand new one on a child’s swing….no wait, of course, I’ve got it……. all the old ones have been shipped to Africa!

See, its Africa’s fault again that we have to use a perfectly good tyre on a child’s swing, (he says, tongue firmly in cheek).

Seriously though, life here in Norway is looking pretty good and it is certainly privileged; but alas, all that wealth has to be earned first….so I had better get to it!

Stay well

Good point Andy, guess it would be pretty extravagant to use a brand new tyre on a kids swing!

    Thanks for stopping by!

I guess that we are all winners of “The Ovarian Lottery” Gunhild.
As Warren Buffet said “The world is unfair, and I have been very lucky. I was born white – and male – in the world’s richest country, to parents that took care of me, and inspired me. I could, for example, have been born a woman – in Bangladesh – with few possibilities of development. It’s a big lottery.”

I guess I was just poking fun at Norway after looking at too many houses that we can’t quite afford, moving here from a ‘poorer’ country! Like I said, sometimes it is the little details that leave an impression!

‘Happy’ May 17th for tomorrow, (do you say that?) either way, lets hope the rain holds off and we all have a nice day!

Maybe it was a factory second – a new tyre that had a defect so it couldn’t be used on the road. I know Norwegians are wealthy, but they’re not stupid!

Well, that was a thought-provoking observation. I guess we tend to take much of our daily wealth for granted here in Norway. So, it is certainly a good thing that you and others move here and can help us realize our own luck (because Norway’s wealth is certainly not only caused by hard work – it is also a more-than-fair-share-of-luck and free natural resources involved…)
